Preventative Dental Care in Rancho Cucamonga

While dentists can fix almost any tooth problem today, the best way to make sure you've got a healthy smile is by practicing good preventative dental care. At Dr. Hattar Dental we recommend that all of our patients come in for regular checkups, as well as practicing good oral care at home every day. By combining great daily care with checkups and cleanings in our office, we can prevent most dental issues from developing.

Basic Tooth and Gum Care

The most important thing you can do to keep your teeth healthy is to clean them regularly and properly. Use a toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles, and make sure to brush gently. Too much pressure can erode your tooth enamel, allowing dental issues to take hold.

After thoroughly brushing your teeth, it's important to floss between every pair to remove any food or plaque between them. Pull the floss into the shape of a letter C, then pull it down under the gum line and back out. While this shouldn't hurt your gums if they're healthy, there may be a bit of bleeding if you're not accustomed to flossing on a regular basis.

The Importance of Regular Dental Exams

Even if you take excellent care of your teeth and gums every day, it's still important for you to come in for regular dental examinations. Most dental problems begin with microscopic bacteria growing in your mouth, hiding in crevices in the plaque in your gum line. These bacteria can eat away at your teeth, causing structural damage before you even notice any symptoms. During dental cleaning and examinations, our dentist can detect and reverse any damage this bacteria has done, stopping the problem while it's still minor.

Consequences of Poor Oral Care

It may seem like an unnecessary waste of time to spend an hour or two at the dentist twice a year, but lack of oral hygiene and dental care can have permanent results. If you don't brush your teeth, a sticky film called plaque will form on them. If this plaque is left on your teeth, it can harden into a yellow substance called tartar. This tartar is filled with microscopic spaces where bacteria can grow.

Allowing these germs to grow can cause rotting and discoloration, tooth sensitivity, tooth decay and tooth loss, and even pain and infection. Mouth infections can spread to your sinuses, heart, and other internal organs in serious cases, causing life-threatening health problems.
